The TV fits perfectly into the entertainment center, so if someone wants both, they will work together. However if someone just wants one or the other, that's fine too.

1) Toshiba 32" color CRT TV. Works fine and we have the owner's manual, but not the remote. A simple universal remote will work thought (that's what we used).
2) Entertainment center (19.5 inches wide, 69.5 inches long, 52 inches tall). The entertainment center is on casters. It has some scratches on the top as well on on the bottom (both shown in the pictures) where the door has rubbed.

A DECISION ABOUT NON-CREEKER PARTICIPATION

Thanks to everyone who responded on the blog and Facebook or through private messages! Your feelings about non-Creekers participating on Trading Post were varied, as are mine, and people on both sides brought up some good things to consider. I was going to respond to specific points people mentioned, but decided to just say I've gone from leaning one way to leaning the other ... then bouncing back and forth a couple more times.

Anyway, here's what the plan is. Former Creekers may continue using the Trading Post. As it is, for the last several months I've left up the existing posts of people who I knew had changed churches. I just hadn't (to my knowledge, anyway) received requests for new posts from people who aren't at Athey anymore.

I do, however, have one request for former Creekers. Please let me know you are no longer at Athey when you send me information for a post. I will include that info in your post, which will allow the Creekers who feel more comfortable with and/or prefer the convenience of making trades at church to continue doing so.

If this works, then I'll let it be. If it creates problems of any sort (and please let me know if it does), then I'll reconsider my decision.

A QUESTION ABOUT PARTICIPATION

I was asked a question today that I knew was inevitable, but I'm not sure how to answer and would like some feedback.

Can non-Creekers be involved with the Trading Post?

There are people who, for various reasons, have moved to other churches, but still have ties to Athey and would like to keep participating on the Trading Post.

Part of me says yes. Athey, after all, is not an exclusive club that shuns people who have switched churches. If former Creekers still want to play give and take with their old church family, then I think that's fantastic.

Part of me says no. I wonder how I'd deal with non-Creekers, particularly ones who know their former Creeker friends use the site, and want to jump in the mix. Maybe it wouldn't be an issue, but it's something to consider.

Part of me says we could do it now and clamp down later if we need to.

All of me says I have preggo brain and can't make too many decisions in a day. :)

So, as is the usual drill when there are Trading Post decisions to make, give me your feedback (you don't need a Blogger account to leave a comment) and I'll go with whatever the majority says.

I'm getting complaints from people about ACTP readers claiming something, then failing to show up when it's time for the item to switch hands. It's happened multiple times over the last several months, so I feel a need to address the situation. I don't ask for names of the people who are flaking, so I have no idea if it's the same people doing it repeatedly or if there are several people who have only done it once. Either way, it needs to stop.

* BE DEPENDABLE - If you claim something, then be where you say you'll be when you said you'd be there. Mark your calendar, set your alarm, or do whatever it takes for you to remember.

* BE CONSIDERATE - If life happens & you're unable to be at the appointed place, then notify the other person immediately. Remember that you're not the only one involved in the transaction and do not inconvenience the other person.

* BE GRATEFUL - If someone is willing to give you something that you need or want, then demonstrate your appreciation by being cooperative.

There are no rules about who gets an item. Most people give it to the first responder, which is the easiest and most logical method, but it's not required. Extending a little grace to someone who flaked on you once is great, but you are under no obligation to give your item to someone who repeatedly inconveniences you by not showing up. If that person is the first responder, then you are welcome to wait for the next responder.

In the event that someone flakes on you, then feel free to send them an e-mail saying you'll be offering it to the next person on the list. You are under no obligation to repeatedly inconvenience yourself to accomodate someone is unreliable.

Since I'm on the topic of waiting for responders, let me mention one more thing for the "givers". Not everyone is glued to their computer (or phone, as the case may be) all day, which means many people don't get a chance to see what's being offered the very second it's posted. If you would like to wait for the day to end before choosing the recipient, which would give more people a chance to participate, then feel free to do so.

The flip side of that is for the "takers". If you are online all day with immediate access to the posts and the offered item is not a need, then consider occasionally waiting til later in the day to respond so that others can get a chance to participate.

Let's keep this site a blessing to everyone involved!

QUICK REMINDER ABOUT TRANSACTIONS

I'm just reminding everyone to not leave ACTP items at the church for people. Please make arrangements to deliver something directly, whether at or between services, through a friend, or outside of church functions. We want this site to only be a blessing, which isn't the case if other people have to take care of items that you left and the recipient failed to pick up.

I know I mentioned this back in the spring, but we have new people here who may not have known this policy and I know it's been happening again. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!!

EXPLANATIONS

Occasionally I'll get an e-mail from someone that includes an explanation for their post, generally the situation that led to their request. For example, and these are totally made up, they're asking for clothes for their kids because the husband lost his job and can't afford to buy any or they need a printer for their new work-from-home job they took on to help pay the rent.

My policy, though I never put it in writing until about five seconds ago, was to leave out the story, which is always about some hardship pertaining to money or health, behind the request when I posted it. I'm sure some have slipped through the cracks, but I do my best to delete the explanations before the requests get posted. The primary reason for that is because it's irrelevant to the post. Either someone has what you need or they don't. The other reason is that I don't want requests to become ploys for pity.

Now, I'm sure that most people are explaining themselves for the sake of conversation or are just detail-oriented people, so no one is in trouble or anything. It's just that lately there has been more of those explanations included in the e-mails I receive and I figured I should let you know why I'm not including them in your posts. So, keep sending me e-mails with the things you want or have, but don't bother telling me why. Fair enough?

A QUESTION ABOUT TRADES

In the last week I've had two people ask me to post a trade request for them and I said no. Both times I offered to do two separate posts, one "wanted" and one "offer". I'm sitting here, though, wondering if I'm being ridiculous.

The reason I haven't posted trades is because I didn't want people to miss out on opportunities to give or get simply because they couldn't trade. Let's say, for example, that I wanted to trade my couch for a chair. If Susie Smith needs a couch and Jill Jones has a chair, but neither of them are able to participate in a trade, then I've just avoided a situation where everyone wins - I could have received Jill's chair and Susie could have gotten my couch. So my purpose in separating the two parts of a trade were to increase the odds of everyone getting what they need. Does that make sense? Anyway, I'm wondering if I put too much thought into it. It's certainly possible!

If I were to allow trades, then I'm not sure how that would work out. Using the example above, what would I do if posted the trade request and someone offered me a chair, but didn't want my couch? Yank the trade and post an offer for my couch? Update the trade post to say "found" on the chair, but leave the couch as still available?

I'd love to have you guys chime in with your opinions and I'll do what the majority want on this one.

I looked for months for a white dresser for my little girl. I couldn't find one that I liked anywhere.. I posted a request on Athey's Blog and someone called me and said they had one. I was thrilled. She was glad to get rid of it and I was glad to have it. AND its just EXACTLY what I wanted. Best of all it was free! I went home praising God for such a blessing.

I BLEW IT

Several months ago I had encouraged all of you to pick a meeting spot at church for swapping items, rather than wandering around in search of people. That's still a good idea.

I also suggested choosing a dropping point, a place where the recipient of an item could pick up something the giver had left for them. That was a bad idea and I take full responsibility for it. That suggestion has been deleted from the initial post.

The problem is that sometimes the recipient fails to show up for the service or forgets to pick up the item. Then the staff is left with some random item behind the media table or under a check-in table. The item wasn't their responsibility in the first place, so they put it in a lost & found bin. Sometimes no one claims it and the staff gets stuck with the responsibility of taking it to Goodwill.

Other times the giver or receiver will ask the church if the item was found and the staff will say "no". They're not necessarily lying. They simply didn't see it in whichever of the 5-6 lost & found bins, all kept in various places, they had a chance to look in.

I tell you all of that for two reasons. First, don't leave stuff at church for someone to pick up. Wait until you can put it directly in their hands. That's my main point. The ACTP site needs to be a blessing to people, not a burden. That means not making the staff responsible for your stuff.

Second, understand that the lost & found situation is a bit of a mess. That's just part of life in a porta-church and efforts are being made to get it under control in the new building. So, be please be patient and understanding with the staff about that. It's not their job to keep track of everyone's belongings, whether it's things forgotten or misplaced at church or Trading Post transactions that didn't work out as planned. I'm throwing this point in because I've had a handful of people tell me, in response to all the lost & found posts I did last week, that the office had said their item wasn't there ... and it was. So, chill out. Keep track of your stuff. Cut the staff some slack. Know that the situation will improve. Fair enough?

Just so you know I'm not being preachy, I'll make a confession. I've left stuff for people too. I even did it on Sunday. But I'm not doing it anymore.

ANOTHER NEW TITLE

I recently added "WANTED TO BORROW" as a title for requests where the person only wants to borrow the item. Today I'm adding "OFFER TO LEND" for items that the person is only willing to let people borrow, but does not want to give away permanently. Both types of offers, "OFFER" and "OFFER TO LEND" can both be found under the "offer" label on the sidebar.

A NEW TITLE OPTION

I am going to add a new title to posts. I currently use "WANTED" and "OFFER", but I'm going to add "WANTED TO BORROW". This title will only be used for items that are exclusively for borrowing, not for items that could be kept or borrowed. The label at the bottom of the post for both types of requests will still be "wanted".

For example, someone who is looking for a carseat to keep or borrow will get the "WANTED" title, but someone who needs to borrow clothing for a specific weekend, with no intention or desire to keep it, will get the "WANTED TO BORROW" title. Both posts could be found by clicking on the "wanted" label on the right side of the screen.

BUSINESS DIRECTORY

I have been asked several times over the last year if I would include a business directory, in one way or another, on this site. Each time I've declined. Since the question comes up regularly, I think I should just explain my reasoning here in hopes that everyone will understand where I'm coming from, though you certainly don't have to agree with me, and to cut back on some of the requests.

First, I'm not willing to risk getting pulled into the drama of any business deals gone bad. I can't vouch for the work ethics, quality of work, or personal integrity of the thousands of people at church who run their own business, provide child care, etc, so I don't feel comfortable working in the capacity of a referral service.

Second, I don't want to create an ACCF bubble of existence. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing business with people at church, there are also lots of other qualified people outside the church. If every aspect of our life revolves around our church and the people in it, then we never get to show Christ to those who don't know him outside of the church walls.

Third, even if the first two reasons didn't exist, I only have so many hours in my day. I have a home, a husband, three kids, church activities, three blogs, homeschool two of our kids, and deal with all the other random things that pop up in daily life. Running a business directory in the way that I envision it being done is something I simply don't have time for.

That being said, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with a church business directory and I understand people's desire to have one. It's just that I personally don't feel comfortable doing it.

I started this site one year ago today with no idea if it would be successful. I just wanted a place for the families at ACCF to have a place to swap maternity clothes, baby gear, toys, and clothes for their kids. Three months later we opted to broaden the scope and started including things unrelated to kids or pregnancy.

To say it's been successful would be an understatement. So many have been diligent to come here, rather than Goodwill, when they clean out their closets. Others have received items their families truly needed. Frivolous items have switched hands. People have connected with new faces. Old friends and former acquaintances have reconnected. It's a blessing for so many people. Thanks so much for making this site work!!

In honor of the site's first birthday, I'm going to give away a Starbucks gift card. There are two ways you can enter the contest. First, leave a comment. MY EMERGENCY BACKUP PLAN

I've often thought about the fact that if I dropped dead or had some emergency situation that temporarily kept me from maintaining this site, then the Trading Post would be stuck. So, I have asked Cindy Hook and Rachel Boggs if they would be willing to cover for me if the need arose. They've both agreed and have been given access to this site. In the event of an emergency (or if I decide to spend a month on an uninhabited island), they'll give you their e-mail addresses for submitting posts and take charge of the site.

Why am I bothering to tell you this? Because I don't want you to think they kidnapped me if you ever see their names at the bottom of a post.

We hit the 6,000 visitor milestone today! Thanks for making this site work by both letting people know what your needs are and passing along the things you no longer need yourself. You make this a fun site to manage!

As a sidenote, I wanted to make a suggestion. I'm sometimes approached at church by someone who is searching for a person they're making an exchange with, but they don't know who the person is or where to find them. Here's what you need to do. Pick a specific meeting place (the stairs, the bench in the lobby, or whatever) and a time, then be there!! Don't just say you'll find each other at church. That's often a hassle, particularly if you don't know the person you're swapping with.

I just wanted to make that suggestion because I've seen several people lately wandering aimlessly in search of someone they don't even know.

We have been very blessed by giving and receiving on the ACCF trading post. Our neatest thing was just this weekend. We got a kitty that is a perfect fit for our family. We wanted a calico that was active and cuddly, and Lucy is perfect! Our old cat, who turned out to be a boy, was named Lucy until we figured out his true nature! So when we saw the picture and read the name, we knew this was the kitty for us!

Just wanted to tell you a story of how your trading post was a blessing. So, I had the little kids devotional book and Tammy was the one who took it. I gave it to her Tuesday night and Wednesday night when I saw her in the parking lot she said she had already used it in her class and will continue to us it. To quote from Tammy "it has everything she needs for a lesson". How cool is that? Also I barely got it to her on Tuesday - we were at the single women's bible study and I saw her leave and I remembered I had the stuff for her and caught her just as she was backing out. Even the trading post has God,s hands in it.

It truly was amazing because I had just been asked to lead chapel the day before. I had looked stuff up online to share, but what was in the book was even more perfect. And the book just "happened" to show up the evening before I needed it.

P.S. I also was blessed with a purse/backpack about one week after my old one broke. It was exactly what I was hoping to purchase when I had some extra money.

First, let me say that I appreciate your feedback concerning the posting of e-mail addresses. I'm going to continue breaking the addresses up, though I'm no longer going to tell you to remove the spaces. I'm confident everyone has that little detail figured out by now.

Second, we have an issue to work out. Over the nine months or so of this blog I've had a handful of requests for posts that are soliciting help for a "cause" of one type or another - pop can drive for a relative's honeymoon fund, book drive for a missionary family, school supply drive for teachers at our church, etc.

So far I've told all those people no. My reasoning is that I don't want this to turn into a "support my cause" site, nor do I want it to get filled with posts that focus on life or work situations. I simply want the posts to cut to the chase with a simple I need ___ or I have ___.

While I do hold the power of veto (that's the perk of being the one who thought up this site), I do want to get feedback from all of you, as you're the ones who make this site work. So, please tell me your thoughts!

Should I allow "support my cause" posts? If so, then what guidelines should be in place for those requests? If not, then what's your reasoning? If you're on the fence, then what are your concerns?

I'll see what you have to say, then make a decision.
